Peter Dowling

I’ve been a keen amateur photographer since I was very young when my grandfather, LJO, who was not only a wonderful photographer but also a creative artist when working in his darkroom, first took me under his wing!

LJO taught me the basics so that I could develop and print my own Box Brownie films, and later it was he who introduced me to the dark arts of enlarging, cropping and shading with weird shaped tools while the red light glowed and the exposure timer ticked down! No gloss papers for him, only matt or semi-matt, and that great off-white texture that so characterised his work.

I migrated from film to digital some years ago, but it’s only in the last 18 months that the relative affordability of the digital SLR and interchangeable lenses has allowed me to embark on more serious digital imaging.

I know full well that if LJO was alive today he would be leading me a fine old dance, some steps ahead of me and always on the cutting edge of new things. One day I will migrate all his B&W negatives onto digital media and then this website will be really worth looking at!
